Special needs in education is defined as ‘ You are a person with special educational needs if your capacity to participate in and benefit from education is restricted due to an enduring physical, sensory, mental health or learning disability’. In Irish society there are policies in place that ensure children have special need education in ‘mainstream settings as far a possible.’ Given that, there are lots of schools around Ireland that cater for special needs.
For parents of special needs children it can be difficult to decide which is the best school for your child. Here are our tips on searching for the right school:
If your child has been diagnosed with a learning difficulty such as dyslexia, autism or has a physical disability, it important to make sure that you have the right diagnosis by a qualified professional before you embark on seeking specific education requirements. Plus, It is important that as parents you understand everything affecting your child’s emotional and developmental stages and that they will enter and educational environment that will best suit those needs.
With special needs education supported in mainstream education it is important that you contact your local school to see what services are available. Asking questions like ‘ What additional support to you have for ‘this particular type of special need’?’ and ‘Do they provide extra assistance by trained teachers?’ are essential.
Mainstream education can provide additional services that will help your child stay in the classroom including one-on-one teaching if required.
Entering education with your child who has special needs can be a daunting experience. By talking to other parents who share your daily life is a great way to learn about your local education and what is best for your child.
