This new online interactive book club has been developed to encourage primary school children to enjoy the benefits of reading. The initiative has been developed by Dun Laoghaire’s Institute of Art, Design and Technology. The FĺS BookClub seeks to encourage primary school children of all ages to develop their love of reading and to become involved with technology by providing a video recorded book report that can be viewed nationwide by fellow pupils on a child protected website.
The concept is simple. School children read a book of their choice, write a short book report and then record themselves reviewing the book onto a webcam. The schoolchild then uploads their new video report onto the FĺS BookClub website (www.fis.ie).
The launch took place in the classroom of the teacher who originally came up with the idea for FĺS BookClub five years ago, Mr. Brendan Boyle. After some fine-tuning the Institute of Arts, Design and Technology today rolled out the finished project, which can be viewed at www.fis.ie.
Ciaran McCormack, FĺS Creative Manager said, “We are delighted to launch this new initiative. Our aim is to encourage children to read and to engage with technology at an early age through education. In this high tech age and in the future, the majority of jobs will revolve around computers and technology, no matter what the sector. We want to equip school children with as many tools as possible at an early age to provide better career opportunities for their future.”
To register for FĺS BookClub, teachers can simply log onto www.fis.ie, click on “FĺS BookClub” and select “Join your school up”.
