King House in Boyle, Co. Roscommon, offers schools the perfect venue for an interesting, curriculum linked, hands on and memorable visit. The wide selection of education modules, described in some detail in the recently launched brochure, are all designed to help schools deliver the national curriculum in a range of subjects, including the recently introduced History.

The flagships of the programme are the two in-depth modules called ‘Rebels & Raiders’ and ‘Holiday at Rockingham’. Both these emphasise a new and exciting way to approach the teaching and learning of history. Children are provided with a large collection of research information relating to an event or a specific period in the past. They are invited to research the information and then use it to produce either a dramatic reconstruction of the event or a piece of extended writing in the form of a diary or a short story. Those schools that participated last year produced a range of exciting outcomes, including drama scripts, information folders and even a short film. History comes alive by encouraging children to ask questions, have empathy for individuals, and build up a 3D picture of the past.

King House also offers a number of individual, short-term programmes, all tied in to the dramatic exhibitions. Schools are able to devise their own mix and match programme in advance of the visit. Children who visit as members of a group often return with their parents to take another look at the place. Considering how much there is to see at King house, this is not surprising.

Apart from all these curriculum-based activities, King House is also the perfect venue for Summer Term day visits. Schools may wish to combine a visit to King House with a visit to many of the other local attractions, like Tully Boy Animal Farm, Arigna Mining Museum and Lough Key Forest Park. The King House site also houses a restaurant and gift shop.
