I have recently rediscovered the great outdoors! With the recent spell of sunny days (albeit a little bit on the chilly side to get really excited), I have been like a mother possessed; getting everyone’s wellies or runners on, shoving the winter gloves into my pockets (just in case) and heading off to rediscover the places we have forgotten about over the winter months.
The local parks, walks along the canal, open spaces, the playgrounds – it is like they have all been in hibernation for the last few months and the sunshine has lifted off the dust sheets and reminded us that they are there, for our enjoyment and – most importantly –
don’t cost a penny.OK, some of the local parks and playgrounds might not be in tip top condition, but I think we forget that our children don’t tend to notice how fresh the paintwork might look or how cracked the wooden benches are. Our children love the fresh air and wide, open spaces to stretch those legs and run off some of their never-ending supply of energy.
My local community is in the process of getting a playground for the first time. We are watching with interest as, each day, another piece of climbing frame or other piece of equipment is hoisted into place. Slowly but surely, the new playground is coming together, and we are really looking forward to making the most of this excellent new facility in the coming months. It will be hard to ignore; it is literally at the end of our road!
So, even though it’s not exactly ice creams and t-shirt weather, I would encourage you to go and rediscover the great outdoors which is just around the corner from your own doorstep. You never know what you might find.
