A small thank you

text re imageSo, it’s just about all over for another year and as the Christmas tree droops sadly in the corner of the sitting room, I have to admit that I’m not going to be all that sorry to pack away the decorations and get back into the school routine. I know – very bah humbug of me – but there does come a point soon after the turkey has been devoured when the magic of Christmas gets up and leaves the house, and ever since that moment I have been itching to clear everything away; including the uneaten mince pies and left-over Christmas pudding.

But, before we dust off the school lunch boxes, have haircuts and start an ironing marathon (sigh) we have LOTS of thank you letters to write to family and friends for all the amazing presents which found their way under the tree.

Now, in the digital age we live in, I know that handwritten letters are rapidly becoming as antiquated as vinyl records, but I’m sticking to my principles and getting the writing paper and pens out for my eldest to write his letters. Apart from anything else, this is a great way for me to help him with his letter formation and handwriting in general. If the process of writing his Christmas cards to his classmates is anything to go by, after writing a dozen or more, he will have cracked the letter ‘s’ and be writing his own name without asking me to remind him of the right letters.

I know it’s going to take a while and he will get bored way before all the letters are written, but I also know that a handwritten letter will mean so much when it finally reaches its destination. Oh, and of course I’ll have to work my way through those left-over mince pies while offering the occasional helping hand!
