The school bus service provided by Bus Eireann is due to increase by 79 per cent, it has been reported.
RTE states that
secondary school children who make use of the School Transport System, which is supported by the Department of Education, will be faced with a "substantial" rise in their bus fees from the end of September.
The fare for a pupil was 168 per
school year. However, from the end of September, this will increase to 300, the publication reports.
Bus Eireann notes that the School Transport Scheme was established by the Department of Education in 1967 in order to provide school children who have to travel a long distance to reach their seat of learning with a safe means of doing so.
More than 150,000 school children make use of the service every day - 62,000 of whom are in primary education and 88,000 who are at post-primary level.

E300 might sound a lot. But based on typical 160 school days a year, works out at approx E1 each way journey ... where else are you going to get that?
