Cuts to guidance support 'will lead to more school dropouts'

Guidance funding cuts announced by the government will lead to a rise in the number of early school dropouts, it has been claimed.

Speaking at the Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland (ASTI) conference, the body's president Brendan Broderick suggested counselling for teenage pupils is vitally important, Inside Ireland reports.

"As well as giving professional guidance on career and subject choice, the guidance counsellor is often the only access a young person has to a support and referral service," he stated.

According to Mr Broderick, pupils often address their school's counsellor for advice on mental health issues, sexual health problems, peer pressure, bullying, issues at home, learning difficulties and alcohol and substance abuse.

It was noted a recent survey by Millward Brown Lansdowne found seven out of ten second-level schools are considering cutting back on guidance support due to funding restrictions.

The news comes after ASTI threatened to pull out of the Croke Park agreement if cuts were made to teacher's allowances for qualifications, posts of responsibility or supervision.
