An increasing number of post-primary
teachers are experiencing income poverty, according to senior Teachers Union of Ireland (TUI) officials.
The Irish Times reports how TUI general secretary John MacGabhann made the claim before he addressed the annual conference of the Principals' and Deputy Principals' Association.
He claimed drastic cuts to hours has led to a significant number of teachers earning as little as €6,000 to €12,000 a year.
"People do not choose teaching as a profession because they want to get rich, but they would prefer not to be poor," Mr MacGabhann stated.
It was suggested that contrary to the image of having a comfortable well-paid job, many teachers are finding securing a mortgage and paying rent is increasingly challenging.
The problem was described as a national issue, with
post-primary schools in every county said to have a number of teachers on such low salaries.
