Proposals to cut the qualification allowance for new
teachers have been met with criticism from unions that claim such a move would be "unacceptable and unfair".
The cabinet is set to review plans to increase the starting salary of new entrants to teaching from €27,800 to €30,000, but remove their qualification allowance, the Irish Times reports.
A teacher with an honours primary degree in education currently receives around €4,500 annually under the allowance.
If approved, the proposals will see the creation of a new pay scale for new entrants to teaching, which will remove the newly-qualified from the 25-point incremental scale.
The cuts to allowances will not affect existing teachers, which means those who enter the profession this year will earn around 30 per cent less than their colleagues who secured teaching positions in 2010.
General Secretary of the Irish National Teachers Organisation Shelia Nunn said the proposals were "unacceptable and unfair" as they only single out those entering teaching.
