Digital learning embraced by over 60 schools

Posted by SchoolDays Newshound on 31/08/2012. Digital learning embraced by over 60 schoolsTags: Secondary School News

A new e-book initiative has seen more than 60 schools swap traditional books for hand-held devices that bring interactive learning to the classroom.

The Educational Company of Ireland (Edco) has rolled out a full curriculum of post-primary e-books following a successful two-year pilot, Business and Leadership reports.

Students can use the devices to take notes, highlight and search text, create bookmarks and link to external resources, which allows them to personalise their educational resources.

Julie Glennon, sales and marketing manager at Edco, said: "There are many advantages with e-learning, the most important being that learning is greatly enhanced through interactivity and bringing lessons to life."

She added that e-books will help schools and parents to save money, as well as significantly reduce the amount of weight children have to carry in their rucksacks.

Edco developed the devices alongside Intel, Apple, Microsoft and Samsung as part of a drive to support the Bring Your Own Device initiative.

I hope there is a study going on in these schools and we can find out if there are any side effects to these tablets. I would be interested to know if there is an increase in kids with CVS or photo sensitivity and if it improves childrens general health re: back pain etc

I still don't get the rush towards tablets, like the iPad. Would students not be better off with netbooks or small laptops - devices that have a proper keyboard, so they can use the computer for their exercises, essays and homework, as well as reading?

As I understand it, there is no compelling argument for books on a screen. The research doesn't really support the move.

We had the option with our eldest son last year, and he and Mum decided against it. (I was in favour initially, but then I'm a techie. Playing with the book samples on-line changed my mind.)

Thinking about it now - even though I have a Kindle and an iPad, I personally choose paper every time I want to read something in depth. On holidays, I bring books and the Kindle, so if I run out, or don't feel like reading what I've brought, I have a backup. But I would never buy a book I really want to savour in ebook form.

The only reason for going with the iPad, I reckon, is the weight issue. I could barely lift my youngster's schoolbag. I went off and bought him a 2nd set of books for home, so he wouldn't have to carry everyting to and fro. Oh, yeah, and so they can play games on them at lunchtime...

I would like to buy a second set of school book for 5th Year but it will have to be in PDF format or to upload onto an Ipad as long as it can be transfert into a laptop, would you know where I can buy them?

I agree with the keyboard view, but the reason you would use a tablet over a laptop/netbook is that it is lighter and the tablet battery will last the whole day without using the schools power.
