Do your children still believe?

text re imageHurray – finally December has arrived and with the amount of snow we’re getting at the moment it already feels very festive. Christmas activities and events for families start in earnest this weekend and some houses already have their decorations up; twinkling and flashing across the street.

In the festive mood ourselves, we wrote our Santa letters at the weekend. This was the first year my eldest was able to write his own letter (with just a little help) and up the chimney they went. Magic!

My nephew and niece turned 9 and 12 this year and although they are still clinging onto the notion of Santa, their parents suspect that they may have been having doubts for some time and may even have been told the truth by gossip-mongers at school. And this got me thinking: for how long can you really keep the magic of Christmas alive when your children reach their teenage years (or possibly sooner) and someone, somewhere spreads the news that Santa may not exist?

Have your children asked you about Santa recently or have they already stopped believing? I’m sure many parents will be asked that difficult question for the first time this year and would love to hear how others have handled it.

Personally, I am in total denial that this day will ever come and still like to believe in Santa a little bit myself. What is it they say?: if you don’t believe then a fairy will die (or maybe that’s something else!).

And whether Santa exists or not, I suspect that for many families this year, there will be some serious negotiations about what goes on the list and what Santa may or may not be able to bring as we all face up to the very real impact of political events in recent weeks.

For now, enjoy the snow and keep warm!

We have always followed a pattern on Christmas morning. We have breakfast, get dressed and go to morning Mass at the local church. There are presents under the tree to and from various family and friends, so my son knows that people do but presents for each other to celebrate the season. But while we are at Mass, another present magically appears. It's never wrapped but is always accompanied by a tag, "To Sen, From Santa". Needless to say the magic consists of one parent and child getting in the car and the other parent in the loft trying to get said present into the living room without being seen!! Works every year. :-))

The scene:- My son, aged 10, just into bed, and me there to say goodnight.
"Mum, is Santa real?"
"What do you think?"
"I don't know. That's why I asked. Is he, though?"
"Do you think he is?"
"I don't know, IS HE??"
"Well, if he isn't, then who did we see in Lapland when you were seven?"
"Santa"
"Well, he must be real then. Why do you ask?"
"The lads at school say he isn't"
"Maybe if you believe in him then he will be real"
"The lads say it's the parent."
"So, are you not writing to him this year?"
"Of course I am!"

I have two boys (13 and 11 -in 2nd year and 6th class). This is the first year that both know that "Santa isn't real". Got an extra year out of the 13yr old two years ago (or so we believe). To keep some of the magic they both wrote their letters to Santa asking for a present and surprise. "Santa" arrived during the night and left their presents in the stockings at the end of their beds as usual (not a good tradition to establish - many sleepless nights spent listining to "I hear him I hear him" everytime you try to enter the room). The surprise caused as much excitment as previous years on Christmas morning but going to bed on Christmas Eve was definitley different and for me a little sad
