A leading paediatrician has called for drivers to be punished with penalty points if they fail to correctly install car seats.

Head of paediatrics at University College Dublin Professor Ronan O'Sullivan said not fitting child seats properly could mean the difference between life and death, the Irish Independent report.

The expert claimed that while parents in Ireland are among the highest users of car seats in Europe, more needs to be done to ensure people realise the seriousness of the issue.

"I would encourage all parents to invest a little time in checking they have a secure, properly fitted restraint for their child," Professor O'Sullivan stated.

The consultant explained how he has seen some "awful cases" during his time treating youngsters involved in crashes and so it is vital awareness is raised.

Citizens Information reminds parents that children under three-years-old must be restrained in an appropriate child seat when travelling in a car or goods vehicle.
