Educate Together is set to launch a campaign urging the government to allow the establishment of multi-denominational
secondary schools in Ireland, it has been reported.
According to the Irish Independent, the organisation currently provides facilities for primary pupils and is keen to increase provision.
Parents from across the country gathered in Dublin last week to attend Educate Together's information session on the subject.
"More than 10,000 pupils attend the multi-denominational schools at primary level and there are 56 primary schools, but the Department of Education has so far failed to give the go-ahead to the schools at second level," the publication noted.
A recent poll carried out by the Irish Times and Ipsos MRBI revealed that 61 per cent of people think the church should relinquish its control of the country's
education system.
Just 28 per cent of those surveyed said they are in favour of the church maintaining its current position.

The church or any religious sect/group has absoutly no place in public education. If people want a religious education they should have to go to private schools. If people in public education/schools want to pursue their religion they can do it outside of school hours.
The forced religious doctrination in public schools in Ireland is not only disgraceful but degrading and abusive towards the child, the parents, the tax payer and extremely abusive towards the non conforming child/family. The church in Ireland uses the public school & taxpayers money to coerce the nation to conform. No religion or education should be offered under these biased terms. It is not public education open to all the people of Ireland but a catholic/protestant education that everybody else has to put up with and non relgious taxpayers have to pay for. As education in Ireland is compulsory the Irish State/goverment is stating that a Catholic or Protestant public education is compulsory! Religion should always be a personal choice not coerced.
All children should be offered education without strings.
The church has no right in the public sector.
