Many children in
secondary schools are likely to have put their health at risk waiting for their
Leaving Certificate results.
The grades, which were released today (August 18th 2010), have been said to be the cause of thousands of sixth-year pupils suffering from sleepless nights and stress.
A recent study by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) published in the Irish Independent revealed that children's welfare and development are being put at risk for good exam marks.
It showed that over 50 per cent of female pupils are stressed during their sixth-form year and 40 per cent are losing sleep.
With regards to boys, a third said they felt under strain during their final year and 20 per cent said they lost sleep.
Pupils who receive their results today can receive assistance from a helpline set up by the National Parents Council, Eircom and the Irish Independent.
Telephone queries will be handed to counsellors who can answer questions and give advice.
