For those children (and parents!) who are struggling with the return to the school routine after christmas, they can at least get some comfort in the knowledge that not only are the Easter School Holidays due early this year, but that they will also have a full 19 days off!

Schools will finish up for the Easter School Holidays on Wednesday, March 16th re-opening on Monday, April 4th.

The long Easter break includes St Patrick's Day on Thursday 17th. The Department of Education granted Friday 18th as a bonus holiday in order to avoid bringing the kids back in to school for just one day. However, this bonus day will have to be made up somewhere else in the school year. The Easter break this year will of course be particularly eventful as Ireland commemorates the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising. Easter Sunday will fall on March 27th this year.

Primary schools are required to open for 183 days in total, while the obligatory number of days for secondary schools stand at 167 days.

The holiday dates for schools is determined through joint agreement of the Department of Education, Teacher's Unions and school management authorities. The annual school holiday dates are organised into cycles of three years called the Standardised Year. The remaining holiday dates for the current school year and for 2016/17 can be viewed here on Schooldays.ie

Secondary Schools will also close for the February mid-term break over the period of Monday 15th to Friday 19th of February with primary schools closing for a minimum of two days (18th & 19th) with the option to take the full week .
