The average amount spent on a
First Communion is expected to increase by €75 this year, despite many people facing financial pressures.
New research by the EBS building society found the total spent on
clothes, parties and presents by most families comes to €554 per child, the Irish Times reports.
Meanwhile, children can expect to receive around €337 worth of gifts, which is up four per cent on 2011.
EBS spokesperson Aidan Power commented that it is surprising to see such large monetary sums being given to youngsters during times of financial austerity.
Mr Power added: "This highlights the fact that regardless of the economic environment, many people are determined to stick with the long-standing traditions that have been in place in Irish society."
First Communions usually take place when a child is aged between seven or eight-years-old and are seen as a right of passage among the Catholic community.
