Going back to the classroom

text re imageI went back to school today. I know – terrifying!

I was reading to Junior Infants at my son’s school as part of a series of events being organised for World Book Day. I will admit that the prospect of reading to 28 five-year-olds was slightly daunting to say the least, but they were absolutely fantastic. They were so enthusiastic and well-behaved and a credit to their parents, their teacher and the school. I read three books; their favourite being ‘Morris the Mankiest Monster’ by Giles Andreae, a book which describes itself as ‘the most revolting children’s book of the year.’ They, of course, loved it!

I then spoke to 5th and 6th class about creative writing which again, was a totally new experience for me. The closest I get to interacting with that age group is when I see my 11 year-old niece. She lives in the UK so I don’t see her much! The children were really interested in what I had to say and asked loads of questions. I think I may have even impressed them when I mentioned that I had a Facebook account and knew who ‘The Stig’ was!

Many of our schools rely on parents to get involved in activities and events like the ones being organised in conjunction with World Book Day. I have to say that having stuck my hand up to volunteer, I was then a little doubtful; would the children be interested in what I had to say? Would they be bored and heckle me? Would I be sent to the principal’s office afterwards?!

Not at all. And having not just survived the experience today, but thoroughly enjoyed it too, I will absolutely be sticking my hand up again. And I would encourage any parent to do the same.
