Retailers should be provided with guidelines on what type of clothing is suitable for different age groups, it has been suggested.
Siobhan Freegard, co-founder of Netmums, said many parents are concerned that children are becoming too sexualised in our society.
She noted that youngsters are confronted with images of their favourite popstars on TV and want to look like them.
"It's about getting that balance between [saying] 'that's what's going on' [and] 'but you're a child, not an adult'," Ms Freegard commented.
She added that providing retailers with guidelines is the answer to the problem, as it is difficulty to actually legislate against what is appropriate and what is not.
Stores such as Tesco and Primark have come under fire in the past for selling push-up bras and hotpants aimed at pre-teens.

Whilst I agree retailers shouldn't sell push up bras for pre-teens, I think the majority of responsibility lies with the parents to ensure they don't buy these kind of items for their children.

I totally agree with 21st Century Mummy. While there might be good to establish some guidelines in kids clothing, family remains the "institution" placing the rules for kids, no mather clothes or else.
