I am feeling quite pleased with myself, because I finally got round to doing something I’ve been promising to do for years. This morning, the children went off to their schools with a lovely home-made card for their teacher and a bag of home-made Christmas cookies. They were thrilled with their creations and proudly handed them to their teachers the minute they saw them.
And although I wondered for a moment whether we had done the right thing when I saw other parents handing over bottles of wine and wrapped boxes, I’d like to think that our
home-made creations were just that little bit special, for the effort and thought we put into making them. Above all else, the children were so proud of what they had made; and the recipients certainly seemed delighted with them.
In true ‘recession’ spirit, this year we have also made our own tree decorations out of salt dough and egg boxes (it’s amazing what a bit of glitter and paint can do to a dull piece of cardboard!) and are making chocolate truffles to give to some of our friends and neighbours. These are all very simple things to make and the children love getting stuck in and especially love the decorating and glitter part (although my kitchen floor isn't always quite so delighted)!
What do you think about gifts for teachers? Have you been less extravagant this year or given a hand-made gift? Or does the thought of making something at home - and the inevitable mess it will create - make you want to reach for the brandy? In any event, it always helps to remember that it is the thought that counts.
School Run Mum will be having a much-needed break next week, but I will be back in January. So Merry Christmas and here’s to great things in the new school term.
