Some Catholic schools in Ireland may be taken over by the government in a bid to increase the diversity of the country's
education system.
At the moment, a total of 92 per cent of primary schools in Ireland are Catholic, with the government having control over the running of just three per cent of them, the Irish Examiner said.
According to a report by the Irish Catholic Newspaper, a list of potential schools that could be targeted by the reforms has already been drawn up.
There are 30 different areas around the country which could be affected by the changes, with the majority of the schools under consideration in the Dublin region.
Earlier this week, the government announced it is to spend more than three billion euros between now and 2016 on conducting upgrades and improvements to the facilities of primary and
secondary schools in Ireland.
It is part of its 39.43 billion euros infrastructure spending programme, reported the Irish Times.
