Irish secondary school students 'lack business enthusiasm'

Irish schoolchildren are applying for business-related courses in lower numbers than in previous years, according to a report.

Citing figures from the Central Applications Office, the Irish Times says more and more students have chosen to pursue scientific subjects as confidence in business has faltered.

The number of schoolchildren applying to study higher-level science was up by nine per cent, with 6,500 students making science their first choice.

There was a marginal increase on last year's figure of business applications, but after a decade of popularity there has still been an overall net decline in the number of kids taking up courses in business.

It was reported in February that many Irish principals were being forced to remove physics and chemistry from the curriculum altogether due to a reduction in government spending.

An article in the Irish Independent claimed that one in five principals had either dropped physics lessons or were planning to.
