The question of whether making primary and
secondary school children stick to a vegetarian diet is healthy has been discussed.
A report in the Irish Independent looked at parents' concerns that their kids may not get enough nutrients if they do not feed them meat products.
Speaking with the newspaper, chairman of the Vegetarian Society of Ireland Colm O'Brien said in order for mothers and fathers to ensure that the health of their youngsters is maintained, they must keep informed of new nutritional developments.
"For instance you can get omega 3 from plants like nuts and seeds which is great for vegetarians," he stated.
Speaking to the publication, mum of two non-meat eaters Hana Hall said she is not worried as "vegetarians have been living wonderfully healthy lives … for a very long time".
The Vegetarian Society of Ireland told the newspaper that one of the most frequent queries they receive is the dietary issues related to raising vegetarian kids.
It advised parents considering putting their children on vegetable-based diets to make sure this includes a variety of pulses, seeds, grains, nuts, fruit and dairy products as well.
