Junior Cert results announced today

Posted by SchoolDays Newshound on 12/09/2012. Junior Cert results announced today Tags: Secondary School News

Thousands of second-level students will today (September 12th) receive their Junior Certificate results.

This year saw the highest number of pupils sit the exams, with 58,798 candidates set to find out their grades, which is an increase of 3.4 per cent on 2011, the Journal reports.

Education Minister Ruairi Quinn wished students good luck ahead of receiving their results, stating: "The wait between June and now has no doubt been long for you and your families, but I hope that the results today reflect the hard work you have put into your studies."

Although the State Examinations Commission will reveal grades across 26 different subjects, maths and science are the two most likely to be under the spotlight, as they came under scrutiny during last month's Leaving Certificate results.

Ahead of anticipated celebrations this evening, Alcohol Action Ireland has reminded students to stay safe and urged parents to discuss a "who, what, where, when and how" plan with their children.

ASTI President Gerry Breslin has sent a message of congratulations to all of the students, teachers, and parents involved in this years Junior Certificate examinations.

The Junior Cert gives students their first experience of the state exams process and is invaluable in guiding them as they prepare for Senior Cycle and the Leaving Cert, said Mr Breslin. The Junior Cert is a fair, impartial and transparent exam which helps young people to learn about setting and reaching educational goals in their lives. It is seen as a valuable measurement of aptitude by students, teachers, and parents in planning for the Leaving Cert and beyond.

The ASTI President said that while the union favours reform of the Junior Cert, such reform must be about improving the learning experiences of all students while ensuring that it continues to provide a reliable, fair, credible and valuable statement for all students regardless of family background, socio-economic status and other factors. It would be folly to subject the Junior Cert exam to a cost-saving exercise which would lower its status and reputation and increase social inequities. This would cause irreparable damage to young peoples experience of the exams system.

On the day of their results, the Irish Second-level Students Union (ISSU) wishes all those receiving their Junior Certificate results today the very best of luck. However, the ISSU appeals to students to be responsible and mindful to others in their celebrations.

Results this year are broadly in line with previous years, and the ISSU are encouraged to see an increase in the proportion of students opting for higher level in core subjects such as English, Irish and Maths.

The ISSU is encouraging all students to enjoy celebrating their well-deserved results, but to stay safe and do so responsibly.
