Nearly 57,000 students across Ireland will find out the results of their Junior Certificate exams today.
Education Minister Ruairi Quinn congratulated all those who sat the tests for their hard work, stating that pupils,
teachers and parents should all be proud of their achievements.
He also said he was "very pleased" to note an increase in the number of students taking higher level science and maths and especially highlighted a rise in the number of higher level Project Maths papers taken.
"Increasing the uptake at higher level is one of the explicit aims of Project Maths and this initial indication of increased uptake by students in the pilot schools is very welcome," Mr Quinn stated.
The minister also urged those who studied higher level science to continue their education in the subject into the senior cycle.
However, the Irish Times noted that one of the key features of the results is high failure rates for maths, mirroring that seen in last month's
Leaving Certificate results, as well as foreign languages, although it noted 98.5 per cent of those taking higher science passed.
