Many parents 'keen to see return of the cane'

Posted by SchoolDays Newshound on 20/09/2011. Many parents 'keen to see return of the cane'Tags: Education And Politics

Concerns about falling levels of discipline in schools may be common among parents, as it has been revealed many people would like to see the return of the cane to classrooms.

A study conducted in the UK by YouGov on behalf of the Times Educational Supplement found 49 per cent of parents were in favour of corporal punishment in the form of caning or smacking, an opinion that was shared by one in five students.

There was also broad support for other methods of discipline, such as sending unruly pupils out of the classroom, after-school detentions and writing lines.

More than four-fifths of the 2,000 parents surveyed felt teachers are shown less respect then when they were at school themselves, with 91 per cent concerned that educators have become more fearful of their students.

However, general secretary of the NASUWT union Chris Keates said a "mythology has grown up around corporal punishment and its effectiveness which was never borne out by reality", noting that research has shown behaviour has improved since corporal punishment was abolished.

I don't know where you got your information - I cannot see any reasonable parent supporting a cane in the classroom - this is child abuse. Was just telling my 12 yr old daughter about a girl in my class when I was younger than her, who was whipped on the back of her hands on countless occasions (for literally nothing). I can still hear the whip of that bamboo cane going through the air and her screams and see her face. Child abuse - I would tell my kid to hit back - yep, we see some fights in the classroom. Discipline begins at home and I agree with Roisin and Grace, there are many other ways to discipline a child.

Parents in favour of their children getting caned at school?????Really??? Someone else inflicting pain on your child with a stick!!! That's is the problem right there, THE PARENTS lack of discipline at home and moral guidance!!!!!!!! Think about it!!!!

Interesting point there Paul! Lack of discipline at home!? You are no longer allowed to slap your child.... this now looks like the parents finding some way to physically punish their kids, within the law!
BTW, some kids need it!

No way. I would not tolerate any adult physically punishing my children. There are plenty of other ways to teach good behaviour.

Not one kid needs corporal punishment, John. There are other ways to discipline a child than cruelty.
