Minister commends the work of green schools

Tags: Education And PoliticsSean Sherlock, Minister for Research and Innovation, yesterday (June 20th) commended teaching facilities in Cork for embracing the Green Schools Programme.
The politician was in the area opening Kilmagner National School - recently refurbished using funds from the Department of Education and Skills - and raised the institution's first green flag, awarded to facilities that have improved their eco-friendliness, during his visit.
The flag system is part of the Green School Programme, an international scheme that has been running for 14 years and aims to improve awareness of environmental issues in the 43 countries in which it is being implemented.
Mr Sherlock said he was "delighted" to see Cork schools are making efforts to educate children on the problems facing the natural world.
" This is a very important initiative in terms of teaching children to look after the environment and instilling values they will take with them to adulthood," he commented.
Developments at Kilmagner School included three new classrooms and other refurbishments, paid for by the Devolved Funding Scheme.

would be nice if they'd cough up for rainwater harvesters for schools too. Typical politician,taking credit for someone else's work

if the minister is so delighted with the green schools why is he not showing more support for the school transport system. budget changes are forcing children off the buses and forcing the parents with their cars back on our roads!! surely this goes against his praise!!!!!

Accessing learning material on line instead of printing and reprinting books which end up in the bin is surely a green initiative. Why is it taking so long to change this ancient practice and move with the times. I thought green schools were supposed to be saving paper.
