The Minister with Responsibility for Primary Care, Alex White, has announced this afternoon that the review of medical cards is to cease with immediate affect.
A new medical framework is to be developed whereby the medical need of the patient will be taken into account when issuing a medical card. This is likely to mean that medical cards will be issued on medical need rather than financial need.
While the review of medical cards is to cease immediately, no timeline has been given as to when the proposed changes will take place. It is also unclear if and when those who have lost their medical card will be re-assessed.
