A new report has revealed new
teachers were overpaid by a total of 1.18 million euros in 2011, due to delays in implementing budget cuts.
Data collected by the Comptroller and Auditor General (C&AG) showed the Department of Education took nine months to implement salary cuts.
The report criticises the department for the delay and the fact it has still not recouped money from new entrants to the profession that were overpaid.
Around 3,000 teachers across Primary and Second-level schools were overpaid approximately €350 in their salaries.
Meanwhile, 1,700 non-teaching staff were also overpaid, according to the report, with this figure not including VEC schools.
The C&AG report showed that the State had a total income of €38.7 billion in 2011, but spent €64.2 billion, leading to a deficit of €25 billion.
State income was up by nearly €3 billion on 2010, but down 21 per cent on the amount of revenue acquired in 2007.
