Parents have spoken out against the government's plans to impose charges on
secondary school students who choose to take oral Irish in their Junior Certificate examinations.
President of the National Parents' Council (post primary) Tommy Walshe stated that the plans to charge extra for this test are not acceptable, the Irish Independent reported.
He said: "Many parents are not working and cannot afford to pay any more, even though they want to give their children the best education they can."
This comes after officials suggested last week that schools could begin making parents pay ten euros per student to cover the expense of examiners for the oral test, in addition to the 103 euros it already costs for each pupil to sit the Junior Certificate.
The news comes less than a month after the newspaper revealed that students have been given a preview of their upcoming oral Irish exams as part of their Leaving Certificates.
