It is vital that parents are aware of how much food their children should be consuming.
This is according to Rich Leigh, founder of Fat Free Fitness, said it is also important that they know what type of produce is good for their sons and daughters.
He noted that teenage girls often have a worrying lack of balance in their diet.
"The notion that all fat and all carbohydrates must be in some way bad for your figure and therefore taken out of the diet equation is one that affects all generations in my experience, but teenage girls in particular," Mr Leigh commented.
With an increasing number of celebrity magazines promoting often unhealthy diets, it is easy for youngsters to sink into the idea that they must conform in order to be attractive, he added.
A study carried out last year by teen magazine Sugar revealed that around six per cent of teenage girls have an eating disorder.
