Schools and colleges across Ireland will today hold ceremonies marking the significance of the Proclamation of Independence.
Today is one of the main highlights of the Ireland 2016 Centenary programme in the education sector. Events including raising the Tricolour, the reading of the 1916 Proclamation followed by a reading of the school's own Proclamation for a new generations. Many schools have developed their own individual and colourful programmes with poetry, music and pageant.
Arts Minister Heather Humphreys described Proclamation Day as a once in a generation occasion and a culmination of months of work by teachers, parents and pupils, who had "so eagerly embraced the Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme".
