A new course aimed at improving the skills of maths
teachers at post-primary level has been backed by the Minister of State for Research and Innovation Sean Sherlock.
The minister welcomed the launch of the Professional Diploma in Mathematics for Teaching, which is designed for 'out-of-field' teachers of the subject.
Those attending the course will undergo training on mathematical content and knowledge, as well as relevant teaching and learning strategies for the revised post-primary syllabuses.
Mr Sherlock commented: "I am encouraged by the interest in the course with some 750 applications received.
"This highlights the professionalism of teachers and their commitment to up-skilling."
The course will be accredited by the University of Limerick and the National University of Ireland, Galway, with the 390 teaching places to be funded by the government.
Specific provision will be made for teachers in Irish-medium schools, with the course available to nationwide applicants.
