Review to take place of bonus points system

Posted by SchoolDays Newshound on 16/08/2012. Review to take place of bonus points systemTags: Secondary School News

A review of the new Leaving Certificate bonus points system is set to be put in place, because of concerns that it could have a dramatic impact on college entry points.

Career experts have predicted that there will be a rise in points needed for courses when the CAO releases college offers on Monday (August 20th), according to the Irish Times.

Minister for education Ruairi Quinn said he would investigate the scheme if it was proving to distort the CAO system.

The bonus system was introduced to encourage more students to take up Higher Level Maths, but critics have stated that it benefits everyone who passes the subject, not just those who actually plan to study a maths or science related subject at third level.

Competition for college courses has been fierce this year, because of the strong performance of many students in Higher Level Maths.

It is feared that the number of students with bonus points could push up the point requirements for many courses to record levels.

One solution that will be considered after discussions with universities is to confine the bonus points to those who go on to study science or technology subjects.
