According to the
Irish Independent today, the State Claims Agency, which handles personal injury and third-party property damage risks and claims for the 92 community and comprehensive schools, has issued a safety alert to schools.
The advisory notice was sent to
schools by the agency after carrying out an investigation of an incident, which happened in a comprehensive secondary school in Munster. The incident concerned a teenage student who was involved in an accident while using a foot-operated treadle guillotine. The student is making a good recovery but received permanent damage to the index finger and thumb of the same hand.
The agency has requested that Principals and Boards of Managed review their risk assessment for all technical-related equipment and in particular has alerted schools on the use of a protective guard while a particular machine is in operation.
