School eBooks launch 'heralds digital learning'

Posted by SchoolDays Newshound on 25/04/2012. School eBooks launch 'heralds digital learning'Tags: Secondary School News

Pupils may no longer have to carry backpacks full of heavy books, as a new range of eBooks designed for students has been launched.

Folens Publishers has created a free app which contains 26 Junior Certificate titles and 16 Leaving Certificate titles and will be available for Android, Apple iOS and Windows digital platforms, the Journal reports.

From June 2012, school children will be able to purchase the resources, which have been enhanced with audio and work with onscreen teacher's eBooks, to create digital learning tools.

The Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland has welcomed the move, noting it may help parents who are struggling to fund the cost of expensive books.

However, the body reminded the government that it "must ensure there is a continuous focus on hardware so that all students have equal access to quality educational experiences".

The chief executive of BackCare Sean McDougall may be pleased to hear the news, as he recently warned that heavy school bags can lead to children suffering back pain and problems.

Great idea, McGill and Educate.ie provide the ebook for free if you already own the textbook. As it is most schools still require the textbook for classwork but the ebook is excellent for homework and other study.

Shame on Folens though, the largest supplier of schoolbooks in Ireland, for charging another 10-15 for digital content after already selling you the same printed material for 20-30.

For those who cannot afford to get into the digital age quite yet, there is a campaign to reduce the weight of school bags on facebook at "lighten the schoolbags"
