Education Minister Ruairi Quinn has launched a new process to examine the possibility of transferring some Roman Catholic schools to other patron bodies.
The move is designed to help meet calls for a greater diversity of school types, with parents in five initial areas asked to complete a survey about who they would like to see running their local primary schools.
Minister Quinn commented: "For many parents this will be the first time they will have a real say in the type of primary school they want their children to go to, whether it is denominational, multi-denominational, all-Irish or another kind."
The areas where the initiative will be trialled are Castlebar, Trim, Arklow, Tramore and Whitehall, with parents of
pre-school and primary school children in these locations asked to state their school preference.
Depending on the results of the survey, the Department of Education and Skills will decide what changes, if any, should be introduced to widen the types of primary schools available in these areas.
Following the initial surveys, the pilot scheme will be rolled out to
44 areas around the country.
