Schools are calling for a lift on a middle-management hiring ban, reports RTE.
Managers and principles of second level schools believe that the ban is seeing Irish school kids suffer.
After discussions on Friday, there are now calls for the department of education to lift the temporary hiring suspension with immediate effect.
RTE reports that recent surveys reveal that up to 20 per cent of existing middle-management posts are now empty because of the hiring ban.
The director of the National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals said that in some cases those higher up the management structure were being forced to take on the work of five assistant principles.
The current situation furthers concerns from the Joint Managerial Board over schools' ability to ensure the progression of its students.
Earlier this week the restriction on the number of Post
Leaving Certificate places came under heavy criticism owing to a geographical imbalance it created.
