Several primary schools in rural parts of the country are set to embark on an unprecedented drive to encourage new students in order to avoid being hit by a cut in
teaching resources.
The Connacht Tribune reports nine establishments in the county are facing the prospect of losing a staff member due to changes in the pupil/teacher ratio unless they can increase their number of pupils.
From the next school year, the number of children needed for a school to keep three educators will rise from 49 to 55, which has resulted in many facilities beginning a drive aimed at four-year-olds in order to maintain their staff levels.
Teaching union INTO has identified several locations that are at risk, though it is reluctant to name them due to fears worried parents will send their children elsewhere, exacerbating the problem.
Elsewhere, it was also recently reported by the BBC that the majority of protestant schools in Co Donegal are facing closure under government plans to shut down or merge establishments with fewer than 20 pupils.
