Tiredness has become an endemic problem in many primary schools, with 92 per cent of teachers claiming they have encountered pupils that are so sleepy they cannot focus in class.
The Sleep Council's (UK) Better Brains With More Sleep
study revealed 38 per cent of educators find sleep deprived youngsters are a daily problem.
Distractions in the bedroom, such as games consoles and TVs, have been blamed alongside a lack of discipline regarding bed times as the reason for the increasing number of tired children in classrooms.
Jessica Alexander of The Sleep Council explained how the organisation was "taken aback by the sheer scale of the problem".
According to 55 per cent of teachers, the brightest pupils are those who appear to be the best slept and wide awake.
The NHS claims seven-year-olds should ideally get 10.5 hours sleep per night otherwise they can become hyperactive and disagreeable, as well as displaying other extremes in behaviour.
