How many students from your school have gone to College?

text re imageSecondary school records on Schooldays.ie have been updated this week to include details of the numbers of students from each school admitted to the different Universities and Colleges around Ireland in September 2012. By visiting any individual school profile on Schooldays.ie you can now view the ‘data on college progression for the school for the last seven years.

Commenting on the data displayed on Schooldays.ie, Annemarie Wade, Managing Director of Schooldays stated that Schooldays.ie chooses not to display an overall list ranking schools throughout Ireland based on college progression levels as the data does not take account of those who went to UCAS colleges, to private colleges, PLC courses or apprenticeships. Additionally Wade points out that as the data provided by the Examinations Commission on Leaving Cert sits for individual schools may include students who sat the Leaving Certificate in a school examination centre but were not students of that school, or perhaps were repeat students or mature students not intending to progress to college, the calculation of progression percentages could potentially be skewed.

Wade highlights that the data on individual school college progression rates only paint part of the picture for any school and do not reflect the extraordinary lengths that schools and individual teachers go to in order to get disadvantaged students past the exam line. Wade also welcomed the Minister’s recent announcement that all schools would be required to introduce self-evaluation in the school year 2012-13 and to provide a summary of the school self-evaluation report and their school improvement plan to their communities. “The wider the range of information made available to parents about schools, the less important school league tables will become for parents.”says Wade. She hopes that a new initiative by Schooldays.ie to facilitate parents providing feedback on their schools in a limited way, will also be an additional aid to parents in sourcing information about schools. As part of this initiate, Schooldays.ie will shortly be displaying survey results based on feedback from parents.

Wade observes that the college progression data for 2012 shows that more Leaving Certificate students than ever are going to college. This is likely to be a reflection of the depressed jobs market and the large increase in third-level places. However while the numbers progressing to College continue to increase, the figures in disadvantaged areas remain lower and fee-paying schools, Gael-scoileanna and state schools in affluent areas still display the highest progression rates.
