Pupils in
secondary schools have been told to consider taking a gap year if they received disappointing
Leaving Certificate results.
Head of Dublin City University's career service Muireann Ni Dhuigneain told the Irish Times that students should be "creative" if they did not receive the grades they were expecting.
She said gap years can be good tools for getting into university and enhancing future career prospects.
"They are very valuable especially for those interested in languages but students must make sure whatever they do is of benefit to them either by furthering their CV, career or college application," she stated.
Ms Dhuigneain suggested they could provide access to a degree course without having to achieve high grades.
President of the Union of Students in Ireland Gary Redmond added that gap years could be beneficial to pupils.
This comes after Wednesday's (August 18th) results revealed that 4,000 out of 58,000 students taking the Leaving Certificate exams failed maths.
