Parents should be banned from smoking in cars with their children.
This is according to Martin Dockrell, director of research and policy at Action on Smoking and Health, who said that since drink driving is banned, it makes sense to outlaw cigarettes behind the wheel.
"In cars and enclosed spaces, people understand that smoking causes direct harm to a child's health," he commented.
Mr Dockrell suggested that smoking should also be banned in children's play areas, as it sets an extremely bad example to youngsters.
"I don't know very many smokers who would want their children to smoke," he added.
Mr Dockrell noted that there is evidence to suggest that kids who are exposed to smoking at home are more likely to take up the habit themselves in the future.
A report published earlier this month by the Tobacco Advisory Group of the Royal College of Physicians said passive smoking is a major hazard to the health of millions of children.

Parents know best
I'm afraid that the proposal to ban smoking in cars occupied by children represents an
unwarranted intrusion into the privacy and autonomy of parenthood. The autonomy to
make one's own decision about risks to subject a child to is not to be interfered with lightly.
It should only be done in cases where there is a substantial threat of severe harm
to the child. Interfering with parental autonomy in a case where there is only minor
risk involved is unwarranted.

If kids under 16 should be protected why not give the same protection to kids who are over 16.
Lets go a step further..ban smoking in cars no matter who is in the car.
And while we are at it lets ban smoking in their homes since kids are more exposed to second-hand smoke.

And after Smoking is banned in the home the children can then be removed from the home to protect them from child abuse. Then they can be raised like good little Socialists. Then they can be told how to act their entire lives. They can be told what to drink, what to eat, who their friends will be, what subjects to take in school and any other control that can be thought of to make this a perfect world. I wonder who's idea of perfect will lead the way. Of course all the children will be so well drugged they won't care what's happening. There should never be any independent thinking allowed.
