Students who have recently experienced trauma may soon be able to delay when they sit their state exams.
Responding to a query from Cork East Fine Gael TD David Stanton, Minister of State for Education Ciaran Cannon said he would consider allowing exceptions to the current rules, the Irish Times reports.
It was claimed teens that have suffered either bereavement, a serious accident or were gravely ill should be able to complete the exam after the appointed time.
"The suggestion is quite simple – that within four to six weeks of not being able to sit the examination for one of these reasons, these students would be facilitated to sit the examination," Mr Cannon remarked.
Mr Stanton clamed fewer than one per cent of the 57,000 students completing
Leaving Certificate exams were in a "crisis" situation and the current regulations should be reviewed.
The Minister's comments follow the start of the state examination period, which commenced yesterday (June 6th).
