The Minister for Research and Innovation, Sen Sherlock, TD, has sent his congratulations to the country's 55,815 Leaving Certificate students who are receiving their results today.

Today is a new beginning for all Leaving Certificate and Leaving Certificate Applied Candidates, not an ending. Remember to take stock and evaluate over the next few days.

There are plenty of facilities available to students including school Guidance Counsellors, parents, exam helplines and online resources to help students during this time. Students should enjoy today and tonight, but do so sensibly. There is a lot more to life than your results and your results night.

ASTI President Gerry Breslin has sent a message of congratulations to the almost 56,000 students receiving their Leaving Certificate results today.

Commenting on the Leaving Cert results, Mr Breslin said: While we often hear stories about the high fliers, the Leaving Cert results are about celebrating the unique talents, interests, abilities and commitment of each and every Leaving Cert student. These students have reached a significant milestone in their lives. After spending five to six years in second-level education, they are now young adults making key decisions about their futures. While these are challenging times, there are many opportunities out there and I would encourage students to take the time to explore all their options in the days and weeks ahead.

Discover Science & Engineering (DSE) today welcomed the 35% rise in students that took the higher level maths course in the Leaving Cert this year. This will put students in a strong position to study science and technology courses at third level.

Companies requiring science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) graduates are the fastest growing sectors of the economy. The increased uptake of these subjects at third level is required as there is a great demand for young technology, science and engineering graduates due to both multinational and indigenous investment from social media, ICT, games development, green tech and medical engineering companies.

Dr. Graham Love, Director of DSE and Director of Policy and Communications for Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) said: It is encouraging to see the increased uptake of students taking higher level maths at Leaving Cert and the excellent results that have been achieved. I congratulate the parents, teachers and careers guidance counselors who have helped guide students to undertake these subjects. There is a growing demand for STEM graduates and these students are one step closer to the vast and exciting opportunities that these industries offer.
