A group of students has urged the Department of Education to ensure it honours pre-election promises not to introduce additional fees for third-level education.
The Union of Students in Ireland (USI) has taken out full-page advertisements in several national newspapers today (November 1st) reminding TDs of a pledge not to bring in university charges, which was signed by Education Minister Ruairi Quinn and Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore.
It stated it has contacted every government TD by post and phone over the past two months and claimed none have committed to standing by their pre-election promises in this area.
President of the USI Gary Redmond said increasing expenses will ensure that third-level education is no longer an option for many young people, which will drive a growing number of individuals to emigrate to seek better opportunities.
He added that "education is central to the recovery of the Irish economy and it cannot be compromised," noting the credibility of the government is under the spotlight on this issue.
The USI has also organised a protest march to raise awareness of the issue, which will take place in Dublin on November 16th.
