In a move that is likely to raise tensions between the ASTI and Government, the Department of Education has circulated a list of schools where teachers are at risk of redundancy if their union does not sign up to the Haddington Road Agreement( HRA). According to the Independent newspaper, the list covers up to 48 teaching posts in 29 named schools where the ASTI has members.
If redundancies were to take place, it would be before the start of the next school year and it would be the first time that compulsory redundancies would be imposed among permanent and pensionable staff in the public service.
The ASTI vote on the HRA will start this week with the Union recommending a no vote. It’s likely to be another ten days before the result is known.
