Teachers at primary schools across Ireland have urged the government to prioritise the issue of school patronage in 2011.
According to the Irish Times, the Irish National Teachers Organisation (INTO) has said all parties concerned with this issue should be provided with a platform upon which they can openly discuss and debate school patronage at the earliest possible time.
The news source continued to state that INTO first called for the implementation of such a forum some five years ago, but this idea had not been developed by ministers in the interim period.
Sheila Nunan, general secretary of the organisation, observed that a system "could be set up now, begin its work in September and be finished by the end of the year" and added that teachers in Ireland had long been against assuming sole control of religious education.
This comes after INTO recently issued a
reminder to teachers about the provisions included in the Croke Park Agreement.
