The Teacher’s Unions, ASTI, INTO and TUI, are expecting thousands of teachers from schools in the Dublin area to take part in a protest rally outside the Dáil at 4.30pm today. ASTI General Secretary Pat King said that today's protest is about sending a message to Government that "there is nothing left to take from education" in the Budget.
Also joining the protest are newly qualified teachers who are demanding equal pay for equal work. According to the ASTI, most newly qualified teachers are unable to find secure teaching work and will spend the next few years subbing. Their starting salaries are 20% less than the starting salary of colleagues who entered teaching just a few years ago.
The protest rally will be addressed by the Presidents of the INTO, ASTI and TUI as well as a new teacher and a student teacher.
