Minister for Education Ruairi Quinn has accused some members of the education sector of not fully appreciating the gravity of the fiscal crisis.
Speaking at the annual conference of the Irish National Teachers Organisation (INTO), Mr Quinn claimed calls for the reversals of budget measures and increased investment in teaching suggests the seriousness of the situation is being overlooked by some.
However, his comments were met with an angry response from the union's general secretary Shelia Nunan, who stated: "We get it, Minister. Our schools see at first-hand how the number of struggling families has rocketed in the five years of recession."
Mr Quinn's speech appeared to frustrate many of the delegates present at the meeting, with 40 teachers from small rural schools staging a silent protest and holding up placards expressing the important role such institutions play in community life.
The INTO conference began on April 9th and today is the final day of the event, which is held at the Gleneagle Hotel, Killarney.

The days when self-Intrest state groups like teachers can threaten strikes to get their demands are over, every cent this country earns for the next generation goes to repay the IMF/ECB debt mountain, my brother-law in the UK earns roughly 50pc less than a teacher in Ireland, and Berti and co walks away with 150,000 per year pension with perks, these self-intrest groups running this country would really need to get a reality check, because if they dont there is no way back for this country.

I am shocked at the volume of 2 teacher/12 pupil schools still in existence.!!!! Rolex.
At a budget deficit of circa 18 bio for 2012 which amounts to an incremental hourly increase of over 2 Mio (per hour). PS pensions will have to be reduced from TD's /medical professions etc .
So threaten all you like we cannot afford to protect your current expectations. Start sharing in the pain. Once the SME's are all gone there will be no one left to contribute to the public purse to pay you. The private sector transfers wealth to the public sector the public sector cannot by definition contribute/transfer wealth to itself. As for the high end pensions/perks they are a disgrace and the only way we can get back into balance is to benchmark against Europe.
So if you wish to go on strike do so before the summer and save us all your the net incremental cash to be borrowed by Govt to fund you.
