Binge drinking among teens in Ireland has fallen, according to the results of a new study.
The Irish Examiner reports how the European School Survey Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs (ESPAD) 2011 shows the nation is no longer one of the top countries for alcohol abuse among youngsters.
Ireland is now around the average mark, with 50 per cent of 15 to 16-year-olds admitting to having drunk alcohol in the past month.
This is down from 58 per cent in 2007 and 73 per cent in 2003, with the European average standing at 57 per cent.
However, when teenagers do drink, they tend to consume more per session than in the majority of other nations featured in the survey.
Irish students were found to have consumed 6.7 centilitres of pure alcohol when they last drank, compared with an average of 5.1 centilitres.
The report also revealed the prevalence of heavy episodic consumption in the nation of 4.6 million inhabitants did not differ from the ESPAD average for the past 30 days.
